Our 2026 partnership with California Bully Rescue supported their new Medical Bridge fund, aka money set aside to help them immediately say yes to urgent medical cases. Cases like Humphrey Bullgart, our latest Hansel Help recipient. The CBR team shares:
“Humphrey Bullgart arrived at Bradshaw Animal Shelter in March 2026 as a stray in heartbreaking physical condition. Estimated to be approximately five years old, he was severely underweight, malnourished, and suffering from multiple untreated medical issues consistent with long-term neglect. Humphrey presented with painful bilateral cherry eyes, severe eye infections, infected facial folds with open lacerations beneath the skin around his nose and face, chronic inflammation, and suspected brachycephalic airway syndrome (BOAS) that affected his ability to breathe comfortably. Veterinary staff also needed to rule out additional complications contributing to vomiting and regurgitation symptoms before surgery could safely proceed.
Despite everything he had endured, Humphrey remained affectionate, gentle, and deeply trusting of people. Because support from The Hansel Foundation was available through our Medical Bridge Fund, California Bully Rescue was able to immediately say yes to pulling Humphrey from the shelter and move forward with urgent diagnostics, surgical intervention, medical stabilization, and recovery care without delaying intake to fundraise.
We are so happy to share that Humphrey is doing incredibly well in foster care and continues to improve every day. His nasal folds are healing beautifully, and his recent follow-up appointment with the veterinarian went very well.
For what was likely the first time in a long time, Humphrey can breathe more comfortably and see more clearly without the irritation and discomfort he had been living with for years. He has already started putting on healthy weight, his energy is improving, and his sweet personality continues to shine through. One of Humphrey’s favorite things to do now is stretch out in the sunshine and sunbathe peacefully, soaking up the comfort and safety of finally being cared for. Watching him relax, heal, and simply enjoy being a dog has been incredibly rewarding for everyone involved in his journey.”
