Our friends at Pet Unity Project are miracle workers for keeping people and pets together. Thanks to their tireless work, Prince George’s County, Maryland’s almost 30-year-ban on pit bull-type dogs was repealed at the end of last year. That huge step saved lives and helped remove barriers, but like anywhere, many PG County families and their pets still struggle with financial, medical, and behavior challenges. The incredible publicity Pet Unity got with the repeal — as well as the fact that pittie owners in the county are more comfortable asking for help now — has only increased the number of requests they get. We are thrilled to be supporting them with a large grant for community pets this year, and in less than a month, they’ve already started to put the funding to use for four families and pups.
Sometimes, the support a family and pet need most is help saying goodbye. Sweet senior Gauge was beloved by his family, who are unhoused. Pet Unity Project helped with several appointments for Gauge to figure out why he wasn’t acting like himself. Unfortunately, he was ultimately diagnosed with a fatal gastric adenocarcinoma. With the help of Hansel Help funding, Pet Unity Project was able to cover his final vet visit to be humanely euthanized. Hansel Help funds and volunteer donations also helped PGPUP to get his ashes and his paw print to his family ❤️🩹.
